Doctor-Inspired Skincare Routine for Women 40+: Supporting Collagen, Fine Lines and Healthy Skin

Doctor-Inspired Skincare Routine for Women 40+ | Best Products for Collagen, Fine Lines & Healthy Ageing

By Dr Ahmed | Villa Skincare

Women in their 40s often tell me:

“My skin suddenly feels drier.”
“My makeup doesn’t sit the same.”
“I’ve noticed more lines and less glow.”

The reality is that skin doesn’t suddenly change overnight. Over time, hydration levels, skin renewal and visible firmness naturally evolve, and previous routines may no longer deliver the same results.

The good news is that effective skincare doesn’t need to become complicated.

My approach is simple: focus on ingredients with a strong rationale behind them and build a routine that supports skin quality, hydration and healthy ageing.

For women over 40, I typically prioritise:
• Vitamin C
• Peptides
• Collagen-supporting skincare
• Retinoids
• Barrier repair
• Daily SPF

Step 1: Start with a Gentle Cleanser

The first mistake I commonly see is over-cleansing.

Skin that feels tight after cleansing isn’t healthier — it’s often a sign that the barrier has been disrupted.

Choose a cleanser that leaves skin comfortable and hydrated.

Recommended options:

Senté Daily Soothing Cleanser  ideal for sensitive, dry or reactive skin

Clinical+ Brightening Facial Wash suitable if dullness, uneven tone or congestion are concerns

Clean skin creates the ideal foundation for active ingredients.

Step 2: Add Antioxidant Protection with Vitamin C

One of the most effective morning steps for healthy ageing is a high-quality antioxidant.

Vitamin C helps support skin radiance and protects against environmental stress that contributes to visible ageing.

Recommended:

SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic — a great option for normal to dry skin

SkinCeuticals Phloretin CF — ideal if pigmentation or oilier skin is more of a concern

Apply after cleansing and before serums.

Step 3: Introduce Peptides to Support Visible Firmness and Expression Lines

If your goal is healthier-looking skin and fewer visible lines, peptides are often one of my favourite additions.

Peptides are short chains of amino acids that support skin appearance and are commonly used in skincare designed to improve the appearance of firmness and fine lines.

For expression lines and smoother-looking skin:

SkinCeuticals P-TIOX Serum

This peptide-powered serum is designed to target the appearance of expression lines while improving visible smoothness and radiance.

I particularly like this option for women who want to improve skin quality while maintaining a natural appearance.

Alternative peptide options:

Clinical+ Polypeptide Firming Serum

Medik8 Advanced Pro-Collagen+ Peptide Cream

Step 4: Support Skin Density with Collagen-Boosting Skincare

One of the most noticeable changes women experience in their 40s is reduced bounce and elasticity.

While skincare doesn’t replace collagen, certain formulations are designed to support the skin’s natural processes and improve the appearance of firmness.

Recommended:

SkinCeuticals Collagen III Amplifier Multi-Peptide Serum

A multi-peptide collagen-supporting serum designed to improve the appearance of firmness and support overall skin quality.

Additional options:

Clinical+ Collagen Boosting Complex

This step works particularly well in the evening routine.

Step 5: Use Retinoids to Target Fine Lines and Wrinkles

If I had to choose one category for visible skin renewal, retinoids would be high on the list.

Retinoids are commonly used to support smoother texture and improve the appearance of fine lines over time.

Recommended progression:

For beginners:
Medik8 Crystal Retinal

For established users:
Obagi Retinol

For experienced skincare users:
ZO Skin Health retinol products

My advice is always to start low and increase gradually.

Step 6: Lock in Hydration and Support the Skin Barrier

Hydrated skin reflects light better and often appears smoother and healthier.

Recommended moisturisers:

Clinical+ Multi-Lipid Replenishing Moisturiser

Medik8 Advanced Pro-Collagen+ Peptide Cream

The goal isn’t heavy moisturising — it’s barrier support.

Step 7: Never Skip SPF

If collagen support and healthy ageing are priorities, sunscreen remains one of the most important products in your routine.

Daily SPF helps preserve the results of every other step.
